Wows and a Pow

Wows:
We joined a footy (rugby) team at work

Sydney is all lit up thanks to Vivid

It's "winter" and we can still go jacket-less

We have a really cute dog

Swans won!!

And the ONLY SADDEST POW:
Our friends Ashleigh and Josh, the first friends we made in Australia, moved back to the USA. After spending the past 14 months backpacking thru Asia and Australia..they have gone back to the land of chick-fi-la and chipotle. We spent last weekend saying goodbye and finished out their time on this side of the world with sangria, card games, and hookah

So sad they are gone but looking forward to hanging out in America someday!

Freedom Ride and a Sausage Sizzle

I've had a few "firsts" over the last couple of weeks-

1. Freedom Riders! A few girlfriends and I went to see a play - The Freedom Ride-- which chronicles the issue of race in Australia in the 1960s. Not sure about you, but I don't recall learning about the racial struggles of Australia in high school. We focused on the civil rights movement in the USA. Well, the Australian civil rights movement was sparked by the American movement-- and aimed to end racism against the indigenous people all over the country. It was quite interesting- the play even mentioned the sit-ins that took place in Nashville. Full circle, right? Talk about worlds colliding!

2. A sausage sizzle!!! Just like Americans have bake sales or BBQs to raise money for a cause, Australians have sausage sizzles! They happen every weekend at Bunnings stores (equivalent of Lowe's) across the country. You buy the food, Bunnings provides the grill, and you keep all the money you make. John and I volunteered along with our "Aussie friends" (the ones we met at the expat kickball game, remember?) on Sunday to raise money for the organization Dance Chance. It's a weekly dance class for people with a disability and was started by our friends Jess and Rose and their mom. It's a great thing.

Sausage, onions, tomaaato sauce and mustard between two pieces of white bread. Simple..but delicious.

A lot of people have said they go to Bunnings on the weekend JUST for a sausage sandwich!

3. Speaking of food...biscuits!!

John boy made these from scratch and they were pretty damn good. Australians don't have biscuits. In fact, they call cookies biscuits. Strange. Try to explain what a biscuit is to someone who's never had one...it's hard!

4. More food! Indian food. We hadn't had Indian food since our visit with our friends in Tasmania. We had been wanting to try out the restaurant in our neighborhood.. And it did not disappoint! Mmmhmm garlic naan, get in my belly.

5. An "American Party" in Australia. Complete with red solo cups, shot-gunning, and beer pong...

The American party style is so classy!

Have a good week, friends!

Gratitude

Thankful for....

A work cruise around the harbor (or harbour...excuse me)...

A 10k run with 6000 other Australian women...

My brother, the college graduate!

Girlfriends and picnics in the park...

A Wednesday night bar crawl with these Wisconsinites...

( sorry for the flash boys..)

And this cute dog who lives with me...

Oh! I got a haircut. First haircut in this country...check. It wasn't the relaxing experience I was used to in the States. You have to pay extra for a shampoo and blow dry (like $30 extra). Say what??? I can kind of understand the shampoo being extra..but the blow dry? You want me to walk out of here with soaking wet hair?? No. Anyway, I got all my dry hairs cut in about 15 minutes flat. Well, I mean she sprayed some water on my hair and then cut it. Which I mean..why not just wash it? I'm over it, I promise... anyway, I can now say I've gotten my hair cut in Spain, Australia and the USA...and the USA wins! Take me back to Elan in Germantown!

Cheers to the freaking weekend, friends!
